The sport climbing events at the 2024 Summer Olympics started on August 5 and will run until August 10.
Taking place at the newly constructed Le Bourget Sport Climbing Venue in Saint-Denis, alongside an aquatic center, these events mark the return of climbing to the Olympic program after its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
This year sees an expansion from two to four medal events, with boulder-and-lead competitions separated from speed climbing. The number of climbers has also increased from 40 in Tokyo to 68 in Paris.
Following feedback on the combined scoring format used in Tokyo, the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) had advocated for separate medals in bouldering, lead, and speed climbing. The International Olympic Committee has responded by introducing distinct medals for two categories per gender: boulder-and-lead combined and speed climbing.
In Paris, 68 climbers will compete, with 28 spots allocated for speed climbing and 40 for the boulder-and-lead combined format. Each country can enter up to four climbers, with a maximum of two per gender in each format.
